Course information
Dutch Proficiency 2 is the right course for you if your Dutch is already at a high level. Upon completing the Dutch Proficiency 2 course, you will have a very thorough and complete knowledge of basic Dutch. After this course you will, among other things, be able to:
- understand details about attitudes and relationships between people
- tell long and complex stories
- read literature, non-fiction texts and columns with ease

Intake
The intake procedure for this course consists of: online intake conversation.
After you have enrolled for this course, we will invite you for an assessment to determine your level. We recommend that you enrol at least two weeks before the start of the course. If you enrol later than this, we cannot guarantee there will be time for the intake procedure.
If you have completed the Dutch Proficiency 1 course at UvA Talen, an assessment will not be necessary.
Course content
During this course, you will increasingly expand your active language skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking). The primary aim of this course is to develop your Dutch proficiency, building on your existing knowledge, so that you can express ideas and viewpoints in Dutch with confidence and accuracy, both orally and in writing. Also, being able to comprehend and discuss newspaper articles and fiction.
By the end of this course you will be able to follow TV programmes and films, even if they contain a lot of slang and idiom. You can follow plays and sketches, understand legal discourses and follow interviews on abstract and complex topics. You understand long and complex texts, rereading tricky passages if necessary. You can understand letters, emails and business correspondence, occasionally using a dictionary if necessary. You can write an extensive discourse for or against something, write a detailed description or an extensive report, and write a short story. You are able to give a clear and well-organised presentation and respond easily to interruptions. You can follow complex interactions between third parties and take part in these in a group discussion, even on abstract and complex topics. You can ask questions, check and question more deeply, and interview someone.
The grammar you learn during this course includes:
- passive constructions
- modal particles
- separable and non-separable verbs
- zullen and zouden
Certificate
You will complete the course with an oral and written exam. If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained.
Course material
The course material is not included in the course price. If you choose to follow lessons in class, you can buy your books through us. You then receive them during the first lesson. If you are going to take an online course, you will buy the books yourself.

What is included in the price of a group course?
The course price includes:
- an intake
- the group course
- an exam
- (if necessary) a resit. You can take the resit within six months after finishing the course.
- a certificate
The course material is not included in the course price.
What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?
There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.
The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.
It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.
How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?
Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.
Which teacher will teach my group course?
In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.
